Summer is here… Bringing longer days, warmer temps, and a natural pull to be outside more.
In Ayurveda, summer is ruled by the Pitta dosha, made of fire and water. This means there’s more heat and intensity – in both the environment and within us. Balanced Pitta gives us energy, drive, and focus. But too much can lead to burnout, irritability, inflammation, and digestive issues.
Here are a few ways to stay balanced and energized as the temps rise:
1. Eat Fresh, Light, and Cooling
Choose foods that balance heat – especially sweet, bitter, and astringent tastes. Go for:
- Cucumbers, watermelon, leafy greens, berries
- Coconut water or lime water
- Fresh herbs like mint and cilantro
- Cooling grains like basmati rice or barley
Cut back on spicy, oily, or fermented foods, which can spike internal heat. If digestion feels off, eat lighter and more often.

2. Shift Your Daily Rhythm
Rise early to enjoy the cooler hours. Get your movement or focused work done before noon, and avoid intense activity during peak heat (10AM – 2PM).
Use the afternoon to rest or focus on quieter tasks. Evenings are great for unwinding – walks, gentle stretching, or connecting with friends.

3. Move Gently
It’s still important to move your body, but skip the intensity. Try:
- Swimming
- Walking in nature
- Gentle yoga or stretching
- Free movement or dancing without pressure
Overexertion in summer can lead to fatigue or emotional flare-ups. Keep it playful and sustainable.

4. Cool the Mind
Pitta can show up as overthinking, frustration, or the urge to control. Create cooling space for your mind with:
- Breathwork like Sheetali or Nadi Shodhana
- Time away from screens and overstimulation
- Creative or soothing hobbies—painting, journaling, music
- Time in or near water

5. Dress + Sleep for the Season
Wear light, breathable fabrics in soft colors like white, blue, and green—these naturally cool the body.
Even with long days, make sleep a priority. Don’t let late sunsets or busy plans steal your rest.
❂
6. Let It Be Light
Summer is meant to feel alive. Let yourself enjoy it – eat fruit outside, take spontaneous trips, laugh more, rest more.
Joy is a form of medicine in Ayurveda. Sometimes the most healing thing is to simply be in the moment.
Staying balanced in summer isn’t about doing more – it’s about knowing when to pause. Let this be a season of presence, pleasure, and tending to yourself in simple ways.
