Amsterdam is one of Europe’s most alluring cities. It has the charm of a small town with all the benefits of a large city.
Here is a list of everything you should try to see and do in Amsterdam to make the most of your time in this fairytale city:
Cycle Around the City
Amsterdam is proudly named the second most bike-friendly city in the world.
With 36% of all traffic movement being by bicycle, and over 515km (320 miles) of dedicated cycle lanes, it is the easiest way to get around town.
Plus, it’s actually the most affordable option! The average bike rental costs only about 10 euros per day.
Visit the Anne Frank House
Located in Central Amsterdam near the Prinsengracht Canal, you can find the Anne Frank House.
This building holds the hiding place where Anne Frank wrote her famous diary during World War II.
Visiting this museum is an emotional experience- one you won’t want to miss.
It is free to stroll around the sidewalks surrounding the building, or you can purchase admission tickets to tour the inside of the property here.
Take to the Waterways!
A visit to Amsterdam wouldn’t be complete without a cruise along the picturesque canals.
Gondolas, houseboats, and packet boats are three common ways to explore the city’s canals.
These guided boat trips offer unparalleled views of the city. It is a great, relaxing way to experience Amsterdam’s history and culture as the scenery glides past.
Tulip Fields
The Spring/Summer months in Amsterdam allow us to experience the beauty of the Dutch tulips in full bloom (March-May).
Step out to the Keukenhof park to see these breathtaking gardens for yourself, or head over to one of the dozens of tulip markets in town.
Take a moment to stop and smell these world renowned flowers!
Van Gogh Museum
Amsterdam is also famed for its artwork, and many museums. One of which, possesses thousands of pieces created by the famous Dutch artist himself, Vincent Van Gogh.
A visit to this exhibit is a must, as this museum houses the world’s largest collection of Van Gogh’s original artwork.
There is also a large park outside of the museum which is perfect for reading, picnicking, or just relaxing after a long day of cycling around the city.
iAmsterdam Sign
Finally, don’t forget to stop at the big red and white ‘iAmsterdam’ letters before you head out!
Perfect photo op or jungle gym 🙂
And that’s my list of suggestions for you!
I was only able to explore Amsterdam for two short days.
If I had more time in this romantic city, I would have loved to visit an old windmill, a couple more coffee shops, and try a stroopwafel.
Did I miss anything?
